CrashPlan

CrashPlan

CrashPlan protects the security of Baylor's information resources by providing cloud-based backups and restorations of primary computers used by faculty and staff.

Availability

CrashPlan is installed on all university-issued primary computers for faculty and staff.

CrashPlan FAQ

CrashPlan is an application that backs up data on Baylor computers. It uses our BearID system along with DUO for authentication and meets our requirements for the protection of FERPA data.

By default, everything in the home directory is backed up. This includes (but is not limited to) files on the Desktop or in the Documents folder. You can verify what is getting backed up from the CrashPlan app on your computer.

The Information Security department has a public Data Classification Guideline to help faculty and staff understand the sensitivity of the information they are using. The guideline is tiered such that information is classified by the most sensitive classification met.

Data Classification Guide: https://its.web.baylor.edu/security/data-classification-standards

Information that CrashPlan backs up can have a maximum classification of "Restricted". If you are unsure of the classification of your data, please contact the HelpDesk and you will be referred to the Information Security staff for guidance.

Yes, you can add these to the backup selection. Instructions here: CrashPlan: Changing the File Selection

Yes, CrashPlan is a requirement for all Category 1 computers and is suggested for use on all Baylor-issued devices.

Instructions for file restores can be found here: CrashPlan: Restoring Files. The CrashPlan console URL that you will need as you follow these instructions is https://console.us2.crashplan.com.

You can check the status of your computer's backup by launching the Code42 app on your computer. CrashPlan offers continuous backups. This means that it is keeping track of files that change and backs up all changes every 15 minutes.

For any other computers, you can login to Baylor's CrashPlan portal at console.us2.crashplan.com

Baylor University's implementation of CrashPlan has several features to ensure confidentiality of backed-up data. All data is encrypted while in transit to the CrashPlan cloud. Data is also encrypted in storage in the CrashPlan cloud.

Verify that important folders on your computer are backed up to CrashPlan.

Instead of storing and transferring data on removable media (flash drives, USB hard drives), consider Baylor's Box service

For any non-removable external drives with important data, add them to your CrashPlan backup selection.

Install monthly updates for your computer's operating system (Windows or macOS) and restart. In addition to keeping your computer secure, the restart allows the background backup service to try again if it ran into any issues.
